We are thrilled to be providing wellbeing boxes to over 1000 young people struggling with the stresses of lockdown and associated mental and emotional health distress.
At The Corner, we have seen an increasing amount of young people accessing our services due to mental and emotional health concerns since lockdown began last March. We were inspired to create The Corner Wellbeing boxes after Youth Enquiry Service Dumfries launched a similar project.
A local family made a generous donation to our service following the tragic death of their son and we felt these wellbeing boxes would be an ideal way to honour his memory while helping other young people who may find themselves in a time of darkness.
After a consultation with local young people, we were able to create the box and source items it should contain. Furthermore, we received funding from Hillcrest Covid-19 fund which has meant we that we have been able to create more boxes; reaching more young people who have seen their mental health decline over the last year. Dundee Carers Partnership have also kindly provided funding so that every young carer living in Dundee will also receive a box, meaning even more people will benefit.
The boxes contain items such as a stress ball, fidget toy, notebook and pen, affirmation cards, bubbles, lip balm, mindfulness colouring book, pencils and various leaflets to promote positive mental health and self-care. The items can be used when young people are feeling upset, anxious, thinking of self-harming or experiencing thoughts of suicide. These items should help ground each young person, making them feel more relaxed and reduce signs of panic. We understand that young people are increasingly worried about their future and some are facing many stresses during lockdown. We hope these boxes will shine a light in their of darkness.
