What The Corner Can Offer you
Gonorrhoea is caused by a bacteria that is spread by unprotected sexual intercourse. This bacteria infects the genitals, rectum and throat of men and women.
By male-to-female genital contact, unprotected vaginal (where the penis enters the vagina), anal (where the penis enters the anus) or oral (from mouth to genitals) sex. Rarely, in the UK it is passed from an infected mother to her baby as it passes down the birth canal.
There are often none, but if there are they could include, for girls: unusual vaginal discharge, which can be a yellow or greenish colour, pain when passing urine, lower abdominal pain, possible irritation or discharge from the anus. For boys, symptoms include a yellow or white discharge from the penis, a burning feeling when passing urine, pain or tenderness in the testicles, and possible irritation or discharge from the anus.
Tests and Treatments:Swabs are taken from any places that may be infected – vagina, penis, anus, throat. A urine sample may also be taken. Gonorrhoea is easily treated with antibiotics. To avoid re-infection, sexual partners should also be treated.
Left untreated in women, Gonorrhoea can spread to the womb and fallopian tubes. Infection here can lead to pain, blockages and infertility. Left untreated in men, Gonorrhoea can lead to a painful infection in the testicles and possibly reduce fertility.
