Drinking alcohol is an accepted part of our culture and most young people who drink alcohol do so without experiencing serious problems. They see it as part of growing up, and in time they are likely to develop sensible drinking habits. However, binge drinking and drunkenness have become much more common over the last decade, particularly amongst young people - so it's important for you to understand the risks and keep safe if you drink.
Alcohol is a powerful drug and it affects the body and brain straight away. About 5 minutes after you have started drinking, alcohol has reached every part of the body!
Drinking alcohol can cause physical damage to your body, and put you more at risk from certain diseases. Drinking lots of alcohol at once, especially if you do this all the time (like EVERY weekend), is likely to damage your health. It can damage your body, for example: - loss of brain cells - liver failure - stomach ulcers - certain types of cancer - heart attacks. Alcohol can also affect the way you look: - it can cause weight gain - it can affect your skin
