What The Corner Can Offer you
Latex sheaths, also known as Johnnies, that cover the penis. They prevent pregnancy by stopping sperm from getting into the female body, and also protect against sexually transmitted infections. If you are buying condoms, always make sure there is a BSI Kitemark or a CE mark on the packaging - this means they have been tested to a higher safety standard. The female condom is latex-free, and is placed into the women's vagina before sex.
Many different types of condoms are available - plain, flavoured & coloured or strong. They can also be bought in supermarkets, chemists, petrol stations, vending machines. They are available free from The Corner, family planning centres, your doctor and health centre.
Condoms are 98% effective in preventing pregnancy, if used perfectly. This is the only contraceptive that can also prevent sexually transmitted diseases. Young men and women can take responsibility for contraception. Condoms are widely available and you can get them free.
Disadvantages Condoms if not used properly may slip or split, especially if torn by sharp fingernails or jewellery. Latex condoms are weakened by oil-based lubricants (like body lotion, baby oil, Vaseline, lip products), which can burst them in seconds. Some men and women are allergic to latex. In this case you can get latex free condoms.
It is important to put the condom on as soon as the penis is erect and BEFORE the penis touches the vagina or genital area. As soon as the man ejaculates and before it goes soft, he should hold the condom in place while slowly pulling out.
